Juwen was born in 1999 in Sichuan Province, China. As a child and teenager, she experienced the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake firsthand, witnessing how a large-scale natural disaster could transform not only the physical landscape, but also individual lives, collective memory, and the rhythms of everyday life. Growing up as part of China’s Generation Z, she was also shaped by a period of rapid economic development, technological change, and shifting global conditions.
For Juwen, all profound changes caused by forces beyond human control produce a sense of “phantom earthquake.” This sensation is not simply a form of anxiety or grief, but a complex state in which the body, memory, and perception continue to register a disturbance even after the event itself has passed. Geological disasters, historical ruptures, and transformations in the social and global order are understood as different manifestations of instability, each altering the relationship between bodies, places, and time. Her practice explores not only the moment when change occurs, but also the prolonged periods of recovery, adaptation, and repair that follow. Through materials, spatial arrangements, interaction, and performance, she examines how environments and individuals retain the traces of forces beyond their control, and how these traces continue to shape the experience of everyday life.
After completing her studies at Sichuan University, Juwen moved to New York in 2021 to explore more diverse forms of artistic expression. Her practice moves across installation, interactive art, performance, and experimental media. Through an ongoing exploration of materials, spatial relationships, and participatory forms, she examines how physical environments can carry memory, how individual experiences become entangled with collective histories, and how seemingly ordinary moments can become traces of a changing world.
